Planting Tips

🌱 1. Seed Preparation
Stratification (optional but beneficial):
To improve germination, cold-stratify the seeds for 2–4 weeks.

Place seeds in a damp paper towel inside a ziplock bag

Refrigerate (not freeze) at 34–40°F (1–4°C)

After 2–4 weeks, sow

🌿 2. When to Plant
Outdoors:

Sow in early spring or late fall (seeds need cool temps to germinate)

Indoors:

Start 4–6 weeks before the last frost date

🌾 3. How to Plant
Soil:

Rich, moist, well-drained soil

pH: 5.5 to 8.0

Light:

Prefers partial shade, tolerates full sun if soil stays moist

Depth:

Sow seeds on the surface or press lightly into soil—do not bury deeply (they need light to germinate)

Spacing:

Thin or transplant to 12–18 inches apart

🌧️ 4. Watering & Care
Keep soil consistently moist, especially during germination (7–14 days)

Once established, nettle is hardy and low maintenance

Can spread aggressively—consider growing in containers or raised beds if you want to control it

⚠️ Safety Tip
Always wear gloves when handling nettle—the stinging hairs can irritate skin

Once dried or cooked, the stinging effect is neutralized

✂️ Harvesting
Begin harvesting leaves once plants are 12–18 inches tall

Use scissors or gloves to snip young upper leaves

Harvest before flowering for best flavor and nutrients
