Planting Tips

Seed Preparation: Red Trumpet Vine seeds benefit from cold stratification. Place seeds in damp sand or peat moss in the refrigerator for 60-90 days before planting, or sow outdoors in fall for natural winter stratification.

When to Plant: Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before last frost, or direct sow in late fall to early winter for spring germination. Seeds need the cold period to break dormancy.

Soil and Location: Choose a sunny to partial shade location with well-draining soil. These vines are adaptable to most soil types but prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH. Ensure you have sturdy support structures in place.

Sowing Instructions: Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed starting mix or garden soil. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination can be slow and irregular, taking 2-8 weeks even after stratification.

Care and Transplanting: Once seedlings have 2-3 sets of true leaves, transplant to larger containers or directly to the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Space plants 6-10 feet apart as they spread vigorously.

Important Note: Be patient - trumpet vines grown from seed typically take 3-7 years to reach flowering maturity, but they're long-lived once established. Consider the vine's aggressive growth habit when choosing planting locations, as it can become invasive in ideal conditions.
