Planting Tips

Planting Location & Soil:
Choose a location with full sun to partial shade (at least 6 hours of morning sunlight ideal) and well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0-7.0. Ensure the planting area has good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
Plant in rich, organic soil by amending with compost or well-aged manure. The soil should retain moisture but never be waterlogged, as clematis roots are susceptible to rot in soggy conditions.

Planting Depth & Spacing:
Plant the crown (where stems meet roots) 2-3 inches deeper than it was in the container to encourage strong root development and protect against clematis wilt.
Space plants 4-6 feet apart if planting multiple vines.
Dig a planting hole twice as wide as the root ball and slightly deeper, then backfill with amended soil, ensuring the plant sits at the proper depth with good soil contact around all roots.

Support & Mulching:
Install a sturdy trellis, arbor, or support structure at planting time, as the vine will begin climbing immediately. Provide something for the leaf stems to wrap around, such as wire mesh, thin slats, or twine. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base, keeping it several inches away from the stem to maintain cool, moist roots while preventing stem rot and pest issues.

Watering & Initial Care:
Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system, providing about 1 inch of water weekly including rainfall. Once established, the plant becomes more drought tolerant.
Keep the root zone cool and shaded while allowing the top growth to reach for sunlight - the old saying "feet in the shade, head in the sun" applies perfectly to clematis cultivation.
