USDA Zones 2-11 - Grows as a fast-maturing, cool-season annual across all zones. Success depends entirely on planting during the cool weather of early spring and fall, avoiding the heat of summer which causes bolting.

Best performance in All Zones during their respective cool seasons. Radishes are not limited by zone but by temperature, thriving in the mild weather of spring and autumn everywhere.

Northern Zones (2-6) - Direct sow in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Plant another crop in late summer to early fall to mature before the first hard freeze. Their speed is a huge advantage in short-season climates.

Hot Climate Zones (7-11) - Plant as a fall, winter, and very early spring crop. Sow seeds in early fall and continue planting every two weeks through the winter into early spring. Avoid planting when temperatures are expected to climb.

Soil Temperature - Germinates in cool soil as low as 45F, but sprouts fastest in soil that is between 55-75F. Quick germination is key to getting a jump on the season.

Growing Season - Requires only 22-28 days to reach maturity. This extremely short season allows for multiple harvests and makes it a perfect "catch crop" to plant between rows of slower-growing vegetables.

Growing your own crisp, delicious radishes is one of the fastest and easiest rewards in gardening. Follow these simple steps for a perfect crop.

When to Plant
Radishes are a cool-season crop and must be grown quickly for the best flavor and texture.

Spring Planting: Sow seeds directly in the garden 4-6 weeks before your average last frost date, as soon as the soil can be worked.

Fall Planting: Sow seeds in late summer or early fall, about 4-6 weeks before your average first fall frost date.

Succession Planting: For a continuous supply, sow a new short row of seeds every 10-14 days throughout the cool parts of your growing season.

Where to Plant
Sunlight: Choose a spot that gets at least 6 hours of full sun per day. In hotter climates, a location with afternoon shade can help extend the growing season.

Soil: Radishes need loose, well-drained, sandy soil to allow their roots to expand easily. Compacted, heavy clay soil will result in small or misshapen roots. Before planting, remove all rocks and clumps and work in some compost to enrich the soil.

How to Plant
Prepare the Soil: Rake the soil bed to a fine, smooth tilth.

Sowing: Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep and 1 inch apart.

Spacing: Space rows about 12 inches apart.

Watering: Water gently and thoroughly after planting. Keep the soil evenly moist to ensure rapid germination, which should occur in 3-7 days.

Thinning is Critical: Once seedlings are 1-2 inches tall, you must thin them to stand 2 inches apart. If radishes are too crowded, they will only produce leaves and will not form a bulbous root. You can eat the tender seedlings you thin out!

Care & Maintenance
The key to a perfect radish is growing it as quickly as possible.

Watering: This is the most important step! Provide consistent and even moisture. Dry soil can cause the roots to become woody, hot-tasting, or to crack and split. Aim for about 1 inch of water per week.

Weeding: Keep the area free of weeds, which compete for water and nutrients. A shallow mulch can help keep weeds down and retain moisture.

Fertilizing: Radishes grow so fast they rarely need fertilizer. If your soil is poor, working in some compost before planting is all that is needed.

How to Harvest
Check for Size: Start checking your radishes about 3 weeks after planting. They are ready to harvest when the roots are about 1 inch in diameter. You can gently push aside the soil at the base of the leaves to check the size.

Don't Wait Too Long: It's better to harvest radishes a little small than too large. Radishes left in the ground too long will become tough, woody, and unpleasantly pungent.

Harvesting: Simply pull them gently from the soil. Brush off the dirt, trim the tops and tail root, and enjoy! Store in the refrigerator for up to a week.
