USDA Hardiness Zones

10, 11

USDA Zones 10-11 - Grows as a perennial in these zones, where it is a popular ground cover or container plant. It is an annual in all other zones, as it is extremely sensitive to cold temperatures.

Best performance in Zones 10-11 where it can be grown outdoors year-round. In all other zones, it must be grown as a warm-season annual or as an indoor houseplant.

Northern Zones (2-9) - Best suited for indoor planting. Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date. Do not move outdoors until all danger of frost has passed and night temperatures are consistently above 55F. Potted planting recommended.

Hot Climate Zones (10-11) - Can be direct sown or transplanted outdoors in the spring. Will thrive with a long, warm growing season.

Soil Temperature - Requires a warm soil for germination, with an optimal soil temperature of 70-85F.

Planting Tips

When to Plant:
Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your last expected frost date. Mimosa pudica is very sensitive to cold, so do not plant outdoors until all danger of frost has passed and night temperatures are consistently above 55F. You can also plant seeds directly outdoors in Zones 10 and 11 after the last expected frost.

Location and Soil:
Choose a location that receives full sun to partial shade. A sunny window is ideal for indoor growing. The sensitive plant prefers well-draining, average soil and can tolerate poor soil. Avoid waterlogged conditions. A soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is ideal.

Starting Seeds:

Seed Preparation: The seeds have a hard coat, so they benefit from scarification. Gently nick the seed coat with a knife or file, or soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting.

Fill seed starting trays or pots with a well-draining seed starting mix.

Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep.

Lightly cover the seeds with soil and gently water.

Place the trays in a warm location, ideally on a heat mat, to encourage germination. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Germination can take anywhere from 7-21 days.

Transplanting Outdoors (Zones 2-9):

Harden off seedlings for a week before transplanting to acclimate them to outdoor conditions.

Space plants 12-18 inches apart in the garden or plant in a container.

Water thoroughly after transplanting.

Care and Maintenance:

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but do not overwater. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.

Fertilizing: The sensitive plant is not a heavy feeder. A balanced, all-purpose fertilizer can be applied once a month during the growing season.

Humidity: Mimosa pudica prefers high humidity. For indoor plants, consider misting the leaves regularly or placing the pot on a tray of pebbles filled with water.

Harvesting: Not a culinary plant. The foliage is for enjoyment. You can prune the plant to maintain its shape and size.
