USDA Hardiness Zones

9, 10, 11

USDA Zones 9-11 - This plant is a tender perennial in these zones, where it can survive the mild winters and return year after year. It is a warm-weather plant that does not tolerate frost.

Best performance in Zones 10-11, where it can be grown outdoors year-round as a perennial.

Cooler Climate Zones (8 and below) - Must be grown as a warm-season annual or as an indoor houseplant. Plant after all danger of frost has passed and temperatures are consistently warm.

Soil Temperature - Requires a high soil temperature for successful germination. A minimum of 70F is needed, with optimal soil temperatures between 75F and 85F for quick and reliable sprouting.

Growing Season - Requires a long, warm, and humid growing season. When grown as an annual, it will provide its full display during the summer months and will die back with the first frost.

Planting Tips

When to Plant:

Indoors: Start seeds indoors at any time of the year if you plan to keep the plant as a houseplant. For outdoor planting, start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date.

Outdoors: Direct sow seeds only after all danger of frost has passed and both daytime and nighttime temperatures are consistently warm, with soil temperatures above 70F.

Seed Preparation:

Sensitive Plant seeds have a hard outer shell that can inhibit germination. To improve sprouting rates, you must scarify the seeds.

Gently scratch or nick the seed coat with a small piece of sandpaper or a knife. Be careful not to damage the inner seed.

After scarifying, soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting. This softens the seed coat and signals to the seed that it's time to sprout.

Planting:

Choose a Container or Location: Sensitive Plant does well in containers, which is ideal for moving it indoors during cold weather. If planting outdoors, choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil.

Soil: Use a light, airy, and well-draining potting mix or garden soil. It does not like to sit in water.

Sow Seeds: Plant the prepared seeds about 1/4 inch deep.

Water: Water thoroughly to moisten the soil. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. A humidity dome or plastic wrap can help maintain moisture.

Provide Warmth: Place the pot or tray in a warm location. A heat mat is highly recommended to maintain a consistent soil temperature of 75F to 85F, which is crucial for good germination.

Germination: Seedlings should emerge within 7-21 days.

Light: Once seedlings appear, move them to a bright location with direct sunlight or under grow lights.

Care & Maintenance:

Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil moist, especially during hot weather. It will droop when it is thirsty.

Humidity: Sensitive Plant loves humidity. Misting the leaves with water can help, especially in dry indoor environments.

Light: Provide at least 6-8 hours of bright, direct sunlight per day. It will get "leggy" and produce fewer flowers in low light.

Handling: While it's fun to watch the leaves close, try not to touch them too frequently as it can stress the plant and use up its energy.

Fertilizing: A light feeding with a balanced, liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season is beneficial, but avoid over-fertilizing.
